How to be a greener driver

Green driving not only reduces CO2 and the damage our driving causes to the environment, it can save you money.

Not only will you use less fuel in your car, but also less maintenance work will be required. Overall green drivers are safer, happier and wealthier drivers and therefore we are providing some unique tips to help you on your way.

Maintain tyre inflation
Under-inflated tyres create more resistance when the car is moving, meaning that engines have to work harder, so more fuel is used and more emissions produced.

Travel lightly
A lighter vehicle means less CO2. A full boot adds weight and therefore increases the load on your engine. Remove anything not required for a journey and save fuel.

Safe speeds
Driving at an appropriate speed reduces CO2. Not only does staying at or within the speed limit increase driver safety, it also reduces CO2 emissions and saves money on petrol costs.

Reduce sharp braking
Less stopping and starting means less CO2. Anticipating traffic flow can reduce the need to start and stop the engine.

Don’t over rev
Over-revving accelerates emissions. Modern car engines are designed to be efficient from the moment they are switched on, so excessive revving only wastes fuel and increases engine wear.

Turn off the engine at long standstills
If you're held up in traffic with long queues for more than three minutes, switch off the engine. This simple technique reduces the amount of harmful emissions released into the environment while in traffic.

Plan your route
Don't get lost. By going the wrong way you waste fuel. Plan the route to be confident of direction and ensure you arrive at your destination in efficient time.
