Simple car maintenance to prepare for MOTS

It’s easy to forget about regular maintenance of your vehicle, but having even the simplest of knowledge about what’s under your bonnet can save you considerable money long-term, especially when it comes to MOTs.

Common practice for any long journey would be to check all fluids including oil, coolant and brake-fluid levels and top up as required. However, this should also be performed on a regularly basis, at least every month.

Hydraulic power-steering systems and automatic gearboxes may also need periodic fluid checks. Dashboard warning lights often alert you when levels drop too low, but you shouldn’t wait until this happens.

Tyres can wear easier if they are not at the right pressure. You need to check the condition and pressure of each tyre every month. Don’t forget to check the spare and confirm the correct tyre pressure, found in the owner’s handbook. Your fuel consumption can also have an effect on how conditioned your tyres are too.

Check the windscreen for chips and cracks. These can quickly spread and cause extra avoidable expense and risk while driving. While you’re there, check the windscreen wipers are in working condition and that you have fluid in the jets.

Ask a friend to help you check all exterior lights work correctly. It can be easy to let a blown bulb slip your knowledge. Door mirrors should also be regularly checked and replaced if broken to avoid reduction in vision while driving.

To avoid wasting money on a failed MoT test, regularly check the listed items before dropping off your vehicle. Even if you’re not able to fix problems yourself, identifying them early can limit repair bills.
