Avoid becoming a car crime statistic this Christmas.
Car owners in some areas of London are most likely to have their vehicles stolen or broken into, a recent study revealed. According to analysis of 3.8m insurance quotation requests by Money supermarket, south-east London is the worst hit area and with Christmas approaching, make sure you do not fall victim to an unwanted surprise with our 5 top car security tips.
- Secure public places - Park your car in secure car parks or a well-lit road. This added visibility deters criminals from poking around your car should they decide to take an interest.
Another factor to consider is to park your car between two others to increase the difficulty of driving the car away. - Nothing valuable visible - Always remove the front panel from your car stereo, hide the Satellite Navigation, remove your mobile phone and never leave other potential valuables in sight. Visible objects provide extra incentive for thieves to make a quick steal. Also, make sure your SatNav hasn’t left any telltale marks on the window that can give the game away.
- Physical locks - A wheel clamp makes life much more challenging for thieves. If your car doesn’t have an electronic immobiliser, consider using a strong steering-wheel lock to help safeguard your car overnight.
Additional locks and security devices are more than likely to present too big a challenge to potential thieves. - Lock doors and never leave keys in the ignition - This may sound like an obvious tip but you would be surprised at the number of car thefts that occur due to carelessness of this nature.
Always lock car doors and close windows, even when paying for petrol and take your keys with you. It only takes a matter of seconds for your car to be easily stolen otherwise. - Tracking device - this device can be invaluable if a car is stolen and dramatically increases the chances of your car returning in the event of theft.
Whatever precautions you take, make sure that extra care is taking during a financially straining period.
