10 Top Winter Tips

More cars experience faults during the winter period than another other season. With cold temperatures expected just around the corner, extra steps need to be carried out to ensure that you and your car are kept safe this winter.

1- Coolant Level

Check the coolant level in your car and be confident that the engine will remain fully-functioning. When topping up the coolant level, it is important to consider the dilution ratio to avoid the potential of freezing in your system.

2- Tyre pressure

Make sure you regularly keep tyres inflated to the required level, particularly if you are travelling on long journeys. The drop in temperature causes the pressure in your tyres to fall which can decrease traction on the road and fuel to mileage consumption.

3- Tyre tread

Check the tread on all tyres to be sure that in icy conditions your car will maintain adequate control.

4- Inspect your brakes

In wet and icy conditions, the braking distance increases. It is essential that your brakes are in peak conditions to be able to cope with the winter demands on the roads.

5- Battery

If your battery has been causing persistent problems recently, now is the time to invest in a new one. Winter weather can put extra stress on the battery, increasing the chances of dying out.

6- Oil

An activity which should be regular maintained is the oil level. Avoid causing engine damage by checking oil levels more frequently during winter.

7- Lights

The winter atmosphere reduces visibility so it is vital that your car lights are all in working order. Test them out and replace any suspected bulbs looking dim.

8- Windscreen wipers

Winter weather can be horrific at times, with heavy rain, sleet and snow. If your wipers are not functioning properly, you are putting yourself and others at risk.

9- Breakdown cover

If you don’t have breakdown cover on your vehicle, invest now. More breakdowns happen over winter than any other season, so ease worries and purchase cover in case of any problems.

10- Winter supplies

Make sure you have sufficient supplies of winter tools to help get you through the winter temperatures. Equipments such as de-icer, scrapper and windscreen wash are all essentials.
