Stop-Start Technology Update
Since first introducing stop-start technology to the Audi range back in June this year, Audi have continued to drive green technology forward to improve fuel economy and CO2 emissions.
As one of the leading manufacturers for providing environmentally friendly models, Audi predict that by 2012 the fuel consumption of all their model range should drop by 20 percent.
Audi have announced plans to combine their pleasurable driving experience with the introduction of an engine start-stop system on the 1.6 TDI and 1.4 TFSI A3 models equipped with the S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission next month.
Also standard in both A3 models is an onboard energy-recovery system. During braking and coasting phases, the system intelligently controls the alternator to recover energy, which is temporarily stored in the battery. By restoring the energy back into the electrical system during acceleration, the alternator excels under a reduced load, consequently saving fuel.
Automatic start-stop systems have become increasingly common in Europe in the last few years, but until now they have pretty much only been available on cars with manual transmissions. Audi is looking to change that with the introduction of a new system on the A3 that is paired with the 7-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission.
The start-stop system demonstrates efficiency potential, particularly in urban traffic, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The system turns the engine off once the car has come to a stop, becoming reactive when the driver presses the clutch. The process is extremely quiet and convenient to operate, with the engine reverting to idle speed while the driver is shifting gears.
